
Jazz music
The Jazz major works to train new generations of professional jazz musicians with diverse knowledge and techniques in various jazz styles, including contemporary popular music. During the study period, students acquire advanced knowledge and skills in musical thinking, creativity, arrangement, improvisation, and playing in ensembles and solos.
Activities
Students in the program compose music for various jazz-style ensembles, music for television, music for films, theater, and original music.
During the winter festival, the movement operates with about 20 ensembles, a jazz marathon, big band concerts, a jazz evening, a jazz music camp in the Keshet Ayalon settlement full of music, workshops, master classes and lectures.
The ensembles perform in the community throughout the year, at jazz festivals, and at Israeli and international events.

Theoretical and practical studies
The program is based on the content of the world-class institution Berklee, Boston. During the study period, students acquire advanced knowledge and skills in improvisation, harmony, arrangement, ear development, jazz history, ensembles, and computer applications.
Students experience a wide variety of ensembles, which perform in Israel and abroad, and also include a wind, singing and rhythm combo, percussion ensemble, full big band, salsa, flute and rhythm quartet, acapella, vocal ensemble, and low brass.
The ensembles play in various styles, such as swing, Daxleyland, be-bop, Latin, free jazz, fusion, rock, modern jazz and original compositions.
The program has an advanced computer lab with the latest equipment and software, where students learn and experiment with Sibelius, Ableton, and MuseScore software. The program has a sophisticated recording studio accompanied by a team of professional recording technicians.

The unique program for the Jazz major
Big Band Orchestra
The Big Band Orchestra is the representative ensemble of the jazz genre, conducted by Mr. Eli Benakot.
The orchestra, in the best jazz tradition, includes trumpets, trombones, saxophones, percussion instruments, and singers, and performs a diverse and extensive repertoire by the best arrangers in Israel and abroad.
The orchestra performs in Israel and abroad, takes part in master classes, and records and documents the matriculation arrangements of the program's graduates.
Performances abroad
Over the years, the orchestra has been invited on numerous study tours, including to leading jazz universities, the New School in New York and Berklee in Boston. Since the 1990s, the orchestra has performed in various communities and music majors at educational institutions in the US, Canada, France, and Germany, including a professional collaboration at LaGuardia High School and an exceptional performance at Lincoln Center in New York.
The movement collaborates and carries out youth exchanges in Germany, and travels to many festivals around the world.

The teachers and ensemble instructors are among the leading musicians in Israel. The program's curriculum has been recognized as unique by the Ministry of Education and is based on the Berklee, Boston curriculum.
Collaborations
The Jazz Department has been a member of the global educational organization Jen-Jazz Education Network for years. Within this framework, we represented Israel at annual conferences in New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Toronto, San Diego, Kentucky, and New Orleans, in the company of about 300 leading ensembles in the field.
The program maintains continuous contact through youth exchanges with the twin city of Givatayim - Esslingen District, Germany.

The program's staff consists of active and renowned jazz musicians, conductors, arrangers, studio technicians and first-class teachers. The team members bring a wealth of experience from the stages, studios and major festivals, and combine jazz tradition with contemporary creation. They provide the program's students with unique professional training that includes playing in ensembles, improvisation, arranging and production, while developing creative and personal thinking that prepares them for a career in the international music world.
