Classical music

The Classical Music major is the oldest of the school's art majors. For sixty years of the institution's existence, the major's staff has promoted and nurtured youth who have chosen to devote their time and energy to the world of classical music, whether in singing, playing, composing, or conducting. The major operates according to a unique program and provides its students with the opportunity to delve deeper into theoretical musical studies and experience a variety of practical activities.

Moshe Aharonov Srok

Teacher, violinist and educator. He was a member of a string ensemble for over a decade. As part of his musical activity, he worked and recorded with countless well-known composers and played in major halls and festivals in Europe and the USA.

Practical studies

In the practical area, the school offers students, depending on their area of specialization, the opportunity to participate in rehearsals of the symphony orchestra and choir, and in workshops such as: multi-piano ensembles, an opera workshop, a flute ensemble, etc. The orchestra and choir hold a series of public concerts each year.
During the week, we give students the afternoons to allow them time for personal training, music lessons, and participation in various organizations, such as youth orchestras, conservatory activities, or singing in choirs. In addition, students receive a weekly yoga class.

Theoretical studies

The major's studies include classes in ear development, harmony, music literature, and music history.
All students in the program complete theoretical and practical studies to the extent of 5 study units in the subject "Music" and are also given the opportunity to take the matriculation exam in music, singing, composition and conducting (matriculation recital) to the same extent.

Unique study program for the classical music major

Gifted class

Telma Yellin is home to the first and only "musically gifted" class in Israel. The class was established and is supervised by the National Gifted and Outstanding Division of the Ministry of Education. The class has a unique curriculum in which students receive extensive adjustments according to the procedures for supervising musical education. Students who do not belong to the musically gifted program also study in one parent class together (grades 10-12), in order to meet their unique needs at school.
All students in the program who join in the ninth grade mix in their first year at school in the general music classes, and upon transitioning to the tenth grade, are placed in the music gifted class or the regular music class.

Academic studies

For particularly outstanding students, an academic study track has been opened, in collaboration with the Buchman-Mehta School. This is a unique track for the school, within which these students are able to begin their studies for a bachelor's degree in music as early as the 11th grade. During the two years of 11th and 12th grades, they are able to complete the theoretical core studies at the academic institution and be eligible for conversion to a baccalaureate in music worth 5 credits, meaning they receive both a baccalaureate grade and academic credit.

Composition and Conducting

The program operates two dedicated tracks for students interested in acquiring tools in the field of composition or conducting, in order to provide them with a solution and professional tools so that they can develop into professional musicians, who are not in the field of instrumental or vocal performance.
These tracks operate as an integral part of the classical music major, with students receiving special theoretical lessons and "stage time" in rehearsals with the musicians and singers on new works and conducting the symphony orchestra.
Conducting studies are only possible from the 10th grade.

Collaborations

The music major operates in close contact and in full cooperation with leading musical institutions: the Buchman-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University, the "Ronen Foundation" Association, the "Mishkenot Sha'ananim" Music Center in Jerusalem, the Young Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tel Aviv School of the Arts - Arison Campus, and conservatories throughout the country.
